Building a House: Picking the Perfect Lot for Your Custom Home
Whether you plan on building a house in the suburbs, out in the country, or in the middle of the city, it’s important to investigate the area thoroughly and pick a building lot in a place where you’ll be happy living. As you pick a lot and get started with a contractor building a house, there are a few factors you need to consider to select the right spot for your new home:
- Unless you work from home, consider what kind of commute you will have from your new place. On a weekday, consider taking a test drive to and from your office to see what the drive will be like.
- Pick between a cul-de-sac lot and one close to a subdivision entrance. Although one close to an entrance will have more traffic, it offers quicker access in and out of the neighbourhood. Comparatively, a lot on a cul-de-sac gives more room for kids to play, but their shape can make snow removal difficult in the winter.
- Before building a house, find out if there are any major projects planned for the area where you want to put your new home. If there are projects planned for their area, determine if they’ll add value to your new home and if you’ll be able to handle the construction.
- You should also make sure the dimensions of your new home will fit well within the dimensions of the lot. For instance, if you plan to build a bigger house, make sure you are okay with having a smaller yard to work with.
